Natural capital accounting is an increasingly important topic for the society, but also a new final frontier for the accounting community. NCA revises the definition of GDP, the national income. When negative outcomes of the society’s actions on natural capital are considered, an appropriately calculated GDP might show a net destruction of wealth in the society, not creation. NCA considers the value of changes in a nation’s resources to comprehensively measure true national income. To iever, a hierarchy of escalating and increasingly complex accounting challenges must be addressed. Those challenges begin with accounting for intangibles at the firm level, progressing to the measurement of a ESG performance at the firm level, followed by measuring the total performance of all entities in a nation. All this while determining the relative important of different natural resources and creating appropriate penalties and incentive systems for consuming and preserving different natural resources. Remember, what cannot be measured cannot be managed.
