Nobel Laureate James Heckman visits Corvinus
The world-renowned Nobel Prize-winning economist in econometrics and microeconomics will visit Corvinus for a three-day event, where he will receive the "Doctor et Professor Honoris Causa" award from the university.Date: 18 December 2024 (Wednesday), 14:00-15:40

At the award ceremony, the Rector of the University, Bruno van Pottelsberghe, will present the title “Doctor et Professor Honoris Causa”. Afterwards, Professor Heckman will deliver a keynote lecture entitled Global Fertility Decline: Its Consequences and Factors to Promote Fertility.

The work of Professor James Heckman
James Joseph Heckman is an American economist, Professor at the University of Chicago, Director of the Center for the Economics of Human Development (CEHD) and Co-Director of the Human Capital and Economic Opportunity Global Working Group (HCEO). Together with Daniel McFadden, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2000 for developing theory and methods for the analysis of individual or household behaviour. His work on selective samples led to the development of solutions (such as Heckman correction) to overcome statistical sample selection problems. His research has provided new insights in areas such as education, early childhood development, ob training and the importance of considering general equilibrium in the analysis of labour markets.
His cooperation with Corvinus University of Budapest
Following the award ceremony, on Thursday and Friday, a scientific conference will take place under the chairmanship of Professor Heckman on “The Factors That Reduce Fertility and The Policies that Enhance it”. The conference will focus on analysing the data on the causes and consequences of fertility decline and the effectiveness of policies and measures that support fertility. The conference is part of the Family, Fertility and Human Development Initiative, in cooperation between the Center for the Economics of Human Development (CEHD), founded by James Heckman at the University of Chicago, and the Corvinus Institute for Advanced Studies (CIAS).
