Language of the event: Hungarian
The story follows Olga (played by Tóth Ildikó), a successful lawyer living in Vienna, who returns to Hungary when her elderly mother, Mária (played by Törőcsik Mari), unexpectedly falls into a coma. Olga uncovers a deeply buried secret that causes her to question her entire life. Her investigation takes her back to the 1950s, a post-war Europe marked by turmoil. At the end of her journey, she faces a version of herself she never knew.
The film explores dramatic situations caused by identity crises and unhealed wounds from Europe’s fragmented post-war history. It also delves into themes of impermanence, the liberating power of uncovering lies and silences, and the traumas born from such concealments. Aurora Borealis addresses these issues through a lens of female sensitivity in unusual circumstances.
Discussion Guests: Júlia Sipos and the Film Club participants.
