National Research Excellence Programme (NRP) – Calls for proposal

Sub-programmes for proposals: 

EXCELLENCE Research Call – the aim of this sub-programme is to provide a preparation opportunity for successful participation in European Research Council (ERC) grants programmes for researchers who have demonstrated their good chances of winning by submitting a high-quality proposal in response to a previous ERC call.  

Maximum duration: 2 years 

Eligible costs: HUF 160 million + HUF 40 million optional in-kind for experimental research (Optional budget: up to 25 % of the basic grant requested for the purchase of laboratory equipment and consumables). 

ADVANCED research calls – aiming to support experienced, excellent researchers with an independent research team, with outstanding publication record, internationally recognised expertise in their field, who can achieve a significant improvement of their research team through the implementation of a timely, novel and relevant research plan in their basic research topic. 

Maximum duration: 4 years

Eligible costs: HUF 120 million + HUF 30 million optional in-kind for experimental research (Optional budget: up to 25 % of the basic grant requested for the purchase of laboratory equipment and consumables). 

STARTING research grant – the aim of this sub-programme is to support young researchers with post-doctoral experience and outstanding performance to enter the next stage of their research career, to gain independent project management experience and thus start building their own research teams around a promising research topic. 

Maximum duration: 4 years 

Eligible costs: HUF 100 million + HUF 25 million optional in-kind for experimental research (Optional budget: up to 25 % of the basic grant requested for the purchase of laboratory equipment and consumables). 

HIGHLIGHT Research Grant – a new sub-programme to be launched in 2025! The program aims to support domestic research teams that have consistently performed at an outstanding level in the international scientific world, have won significant funding for their operations – typically built up thanks to a large grant – and can sustain their excellent performance through this grant. 

Maximum duration: 4 years 

Eligible costs: HUF 320 million + HUF 80 million optional in-kind for experimental research (Optional budget: up to 25 % of the basic grant requested for the purchase of laboratory equipment and consumables). 

Hungarian-Austrian international collaborative research call – Support for joint basic research projects with Austrian research teams.

Maximum duration: 4 years 

Available funding: HUF 68 million 

Hungarian-Slovenian international collaborative research call – Support for joint basic research projects with Slovenian research teams. 

Maximum duration: 3 years 

Available funding: HUF 51 million 

Aid intensity: 100%
