Where Science and Community Meet – The PhD Experience of Anett Zanócz

Why did you decide to pursue a PhD?
Even during my undergraduate studies, I was interested in an academic career because I always wanted to deepen my understanding of accounting and explore ways to further develop my knowledge. That’s why I became a demonstrator, gaining insight into the world of teaching, and actively participated in a student organization where I helped organize university competitions and provided accounting consultations for my fellow students. These experiences strengthened my belief that research and teaching are not only inspiring but also a long-term path in which I can truly thrive.
What is the best thing about being a PhD student?
As a PhD student, I act as a bridge between university lecturers and students, which allows me to see academic education from both perspectives, identifying opportunities and potential challenges. I also get a unique insight into both teaching and research while having the freedom to shape my professional path and decide which direction I want to take in the long run. At the same time, I remain an active part of the university environment, contributing to departmental work and enriching the professional and community life of the university.
What has surprised you the most during your PhD studies?
I never expected to form so many valuable friendships during my PhD. Even in the early stages of the program, during the training and research phase, I met many inspiring individuals through coursework. Later, as a member of the Doctoral Student Union, I had the opportunity to connect with students from different research fields. Their perspectives and experiences not only broadened my horizons but also gave me a new outlook on my own research. These new connections have had a significant impact on both my professional and personal development.
