Lecture or George Kopits about Argentina 

On November 12, 2024, George Kopits, external member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, former President of the Fiscal Council of Hungary, visiting professor at UCEMA (Buenos Aires), gave a lecture entitled “Argentina: Crisis and Regime Change”, organized by the Department of World Economy of Corvinus University of Budapest and the Latin America Subcommittee of the Scientific Committee of the International and Development Studies Section IX of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (HAS). 

László Csaba, Full Member of the HAS, Professor at CEU and Corvinus, in his introduction stressed the importance of knowing the Argentine macroeconomic experience and how to avoid it in Hungary. In his lecture, György Kopits elaborated on the conditions for macroeconomic equilibrium, sustainability and growth, in particular the cooperative or non-cooperative nature of monetary and fiscal policy and the resulting challenges that Argentina has faced over the past 60 years, such as impoverishment, indebtedness, populism and high inflation. The first invited speaker, György Surányi, former President of the Hungarian National Bank and professor at Corvinus University of Budapest, described the differences between Hungarian and Argentine monetary policy in the early 2000s and today. Afterwards, László Mátyás, professor at CEU, gave a brief comparative analysis of the socio-economic and macroeconomic data of Hungary and Argentina.
