Research Fellowship Programs

CIAS is pleased to announce its grant opportunities for each Academic Year in the fall semester. The application process is managed by Corvinus Institute for Advanced Studies. Grants are available to citizens of any country for a variety of research activities (primarily advanced research and related PhD-level teaching).

The Corvinus Institute for Advanced Studies (CIAS) presents a host of distinct advantages to scholars seeking to further their academic pursuits. The program provides a unique opportunity for international academic immersion at a prestigious European institution, not only facilitates intercultural exchange and networking but also encourages collaborative research endeavors, offering scholars the prospect of co-publishing academic work.

CIAS also affords scholars the privilege of engagement within a vibrant, diverse research community that is conducive to both junior and senior research fellows. This environment serves as a crucible for the refinement and enhancement of their scholarly potential.

Furthermore, CIAS offers a propitious milieu for the attainment of academic distinctions, honors, and awards, underpinned by the resources and mentorship provided to scholars. It serves as a launching pad for remarkable achievements within scholars’ chosen academic domains.

This prestigious prospect underscores the caliber of CIAS as a conduit to a rewarding academic vocation.

Research Fellowship Grant Information

Grant categories offered by CIAS

The typical duration of a grant period is one semester (5 months) or two semesters (10 months).

The accepted research fellows are selected from the applicants of the specific grant category.

Junior Research Fellowship:

An applicant will be considered as junior research fellow if

  • the applicant holds a doctoral degree or equivalent professional training;
  • submitted publications in peer-reviewed academic journals (at least Q1 or Q2, Scimago)

The requirement for the researcher at the end of the fellowships is the submission of at least one publication to a Q1 or Q2 journal.

Senior Research Fellowship:

An applicant will be considered as senior research fellow if

  • at least 5 years has passed since the applicant earned his/her PhD and
  • at least 5 articles were published in peer-reviewed academic journals (D1 or Q1, Scimago)

The requirement for the researcher at the end of the fellowships is the submission of at least one publication to a D1 or Q1 journal.

Non-resident Research Fellowship:

This type of grant is recommended for senior researchers, who would like to do their research work partly at Corvinus Institute for Advanced Studies (CIAS) and partly in their home environment.

Within a 5-month period the grantee will spend a minimum of 1 month at CIAS Budapest (preferably at the beginning of the grant period), and the remaining time will be used in the home environment of the researcher.

While at CIAS in Budapest the research fellow will enjoy the professional support of CIAS and Corvinus University of Budapest. He/she could be a member of an active and supportive group of CIAS and its research fellows.

While in Budapest the grantee will receive his/her financial and service support like the resident senior CIAS fellows. (The grant package contains the stipend, travel support, housing, insurance, and family allowance.) While the grantee works in the home environment, he/she will receive a reduced amount of renumeration (only a stipend: 1500 euro/month).

The applicant can define his/her plans for sharing the applied grant period between CIAS-Budapest and the home residence.

Invited Distinguished Research Fellowship:

The invited distinguished research fellows are the scholars who are considered by Corvinus to be a key professional to achieve the university’s strategic goals (therefore they are personally invited) AND fulfill (or exceed) the requirements of a senior research fellow.

Requirements of the Research Fellowship

Eligibility requirements

In pursuit of academic excellence and fostering international collaboration, the CIAS fellowship places a strong emphasis on selecting scholars who possess a significant academic background and a commitment to advancing their research and teaching capabilities. To this end, prospective applicants are required to demonstrate a robust academic foundation, an outstanding publication history, proficiency in English, and a clear vision for their proposed activities in Hungary. Moreover, candidates must guarantee their availability in Budapest for the entire grant period, thus facilitating an uninterrupted scholarly journey. Additionally, while optional, the inclusion of a certification of good health is encouraged.

The following sections outline the criteria and advantages that prospective candidates should consider when applying for this prestigious scholarship, encompassing professional accomplishments, travel and residence experience, as well as their standing within the academic and research domains. These factors collectively contribute to the holistic evaluation of applicants and underscore the scholarship’s commitment to nurturing academic excellence.

Requirements and evaluation criteria:

  • doctoral degree or equivalent professional training or experience
  • outstanding publication history, particularly publications in internationally recognized peer-reviewed academic journals (according to Scimago ranking, Eigenfactor metrics)
  • proficiency in English, appropriate to the proposed research and/or lecturing to be carried out in Hungary
  • a detailed statement of proposed activity for research (and PhD lecturing)
  • availability in Budapest during the whole grant period
  • additionally, while optional, the inclusion of a certification of good health is encouraged

Advantages during the evaluation process:

  • professional accomplishments, honors and awards
  • study trips (during the last five years)
  • successful research grant applications
  • experience or position in the academic field and research

Grant structure offered by CIAS

Housing is arranged individually by the grantee, but if necessary, the University/CIAS can provide support in finding a good housing solution. As a second option, the University can provide fully equipped, high-quality professors’ apartments at the new campus, but these apartments are offered depending on the capacity and the occupancy of the building. Further information about the professors’ apartments and the availability will be provided with the acceptance letter.

Cost of travel: A fixed amount of travel allowance (in one lump-sum) is offered to every research fellow at CIAS, to support them with the expenses at the beginning of their grant period. For those from within Europe it is 700 EUR for a round trip; for those from overseas it is 1400 EUR for a round trip. The travel of any other additional (accompanying) person/s is not covered as part of the grant package (must be covered by the grantee). The grantee’s further travels are not financially supported.

Insurance only for the grantee for the duration of stay is covered by University/CIAS as part of the grant package. The amount is 140 EUR/month.

Family allowance: for those with a spouse or one child 420 EUR/month is added to the stipend. For those with two or more family members (e.g., spouse and one or more children or without a spouse and with two or more children) 700 EUR/month will be added to the stipend, as part of the grant package. The amount for family allowance is proportional to the duration of stay of the family member(s).

Research Fellowship details

Residence in Hungary

Resident research fellows will stay in Budapest for the whole period of the grant. The grantee could leave Budapest for professional activities (e.g., conferences) related to his/her research proposal and short family visits. The Dean of the CIAS must approve any kind of travel in advance. CIAS cannot provide further support to cover the expenses of these trips.

The non-resident research fellows will stay at least 1 month/ 4 weeks in Hungary in the CIAS environment and will spend the other months of the fellowship in their home environment. The stipend and allowances are calculated differently for the grant period according to the place of residence.

Stipend details

The amount of stipend and other allowances is proportional to the duration of stay (XX months). The payments are bound to the performance of the researchers and should be expected to be received every two months. The requirement for receiving the first payment is the possession of a Hungarian TAJ and tax number, which are essential for the bank transactions. The research fellows of CIAS are eligible to receive their last installment according to the service contract, after the submission of a publication into a peer-reviewed journal (D1 or Q1, Q1 or Q2, according to the category of the research fellowship).

Taxation guide

The amount of the calculated tax in Hungary can be as much as around 30% of the pre-tax total.

If the grantee can provide a tax residence certificate according to the Double Taxation Convention between their country of residence and Hungary and a certificate of social security coverage by the grantee’s home country (EU countries: A1 form, non-Eu countries: a document that states that the grantee has a medical and/or health insurance in his/her home country and the grantee pay the contribution for that period there) then he/she will receive the gross amount indicated in the service contract. If the grantee cannot do that, then the University (CIAS) will pay a reduced amount (the amount of the calculated tax will be subtracted from the total amount of the grant package).

Termination and suspension policy

A grant may be revoked, terminated, or suspended.

Grounds for revocation or termination include, but are not limited to:

(a.) violation of any law of Hungary;

(b.) failure to observe satisfactory academic or professional standards;

(c.) physical or mental incapacitation;

(d.) engaging in any unauthorized income-producing activity;

(e.) failure to comply with the grant’s terms and conditions;

(f.) material misinterpretation made by any grantee in the application form or grant document.

A grant may be suspended if:

(a.) the grantee ceases to carry out the project during the grant period;

(b.) the grantee leaves Hungary without authorization by CIAS.

Required activities and tasks to perform

By accepting the grant offered, the grant owner agrees to fulfil the following tasks.

The grantee conducts research during the application period based on the submitted research proposal. The scope and the aims of the research might change slightly due to unexpected obstacles and difficulties or to reasonable change in the focus or methods because of the recent findings. The grantee would need to summarize the reasons and the possible changes and ask the Dean of CIAS for approval.

At the end of the research period the grantee is obliged to submit at least one article about his/her research project. Senior researchers need to publish in D1 or Q1 (Scimago) or equivalent peer-reviewed academic journals, junior researchers need to publish in Q1 or Q2 (Scimago) or equivalent peer-reviewed academic journals.

CIAS research fellows will present their research findings and results at the regular international workshop(s) of CIAS. We organize workshops each semester.

It is also recommended to establish new and/or maintain existing relationships with scholars of the research topic within (and beyond) Corvinus University of Budapest. Every accepted research fellow will be provided with the opportunity to connect with ongoing projects at the university, where they can collaborate and enhance their research results.

The research fellows do not have obligatory teaching activities at the university, but they are welcome to participate in PhD courses, public lectures, and any other professional activities. However, we encourage every semester the collaboration between CIAS research fellows and Corvinus young scholars/PhD candidates, where the researchers are appreciated to share their knowledge and experiences. This usually takes place in the form of mentoring, peer-review and friendly-review, during announced office hours by the grantees.
