On the Path of Curiosity and Mentorship – Rónaföldi-Széll Gábor’s PhD Experiences

For many, academia offers an exciting and challenging path where curiosity and in-depth research come together. For Rónaföldi-Széll Gábor, this journey was a natural choice.

Why did you decide to pursue a PhD?

I consider myself to be a curious person by nature, and I found the best way to immerse myself in the topics I’m interested in is by dedicating myself to researching them in the field of academia, so starting a PhD was a given. I also love to mentor others, to pass on my knowledge and experience, so I am enthusiastic about all the opportunities for teaching that come with being a PhD student.

What is the best thing about being a PhD student?

The best thing about being a PhD student is receiving all the support you need to satisfy your own curiosity, and to advance your field of study by doing so. There’s no greater sense of achievement than receiving the feedback that others found your paper interesting and useful, that certainly wouldn’t have been made if not for your PhD studies.

What was the biggest surprise during your PhD journey?

I never expected the sort of professional and personal welcome and acceptance that I had received. I was afraid that as a young, inexperienced PhD student I wouldn’t be taken seriously, but this is not what happened – from the very first moment I got to feel like a full-fledged member of my institute and my department, and I received a lot of support and good advice from all my colleagues, and from the incredibly supportive PhD student community as well.
