American Corner Budapest is the Budapest office of the American Spaces Program established by the US Department of State and operating within the Sóház building of Corvinus University of Budapest, and now it has received a high diplomatic recognition. Meeting the challenges of the digital age, the high-tech education, culture and information centre aims to provide programmes and services that connect the local community and its members with American society, its values and culture.
With the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, like many other institutions, the American Corner has been forced to use the virtual space. In the spring semester alone, more than 50 virtual programmes (digital literacy, presentation skills, public speaking, improvisation theatre, conversation club, essay writing, high school outreach etc.) were organised. The Washington headquarters of the American Spaces Program, operating in 150 countries around the world, and the management of the Vienna Regional Office have been monitoring the Corners’ virtual activities during the pandemic restrictions. As a result, Marc Dillard, a leading American diplomat currently serving in Hungary, chargé d’affaires, recognised in a special certificate the high-quality, creative virtual activity of the American Corner at Corvinus University, setting an example for Corners around the world.
American Corner offers a free series of cultural programmes for everyone, aimed, in its entirety, at developing skills that meet the challenges of the digital age, in the form of presentations, interactive lectures, workshops and camps. With educational programmes, it intends to provide a platform where future leaders, innovators and business people are able to acquire valuable knowledge regarding the most various topics, using state-of-the-art technologies.
Although American Corner Budapest is a regional centre, working closely with Corvinus student organisations, it also offers exclusive programmes for the students and lecturers of Corvinus University. Information about courses, workshops, English language practice opportunities beginning in the autumn following the renovation of Sóház, lectures on the culture and society of the United States, and analyses of current political events can be found on the renewed social media platforms of the Corner.
