Corvinus launches talent support program for students in need

At the same time, it is important to identify the disadvantages that often prevent these students from attending university at first attempt. Corvinus is now launching an intensive one-year talent support program for young GCSE graduates whose parents or foster parents have no diploma and have not yet been admitted to any higher education institution.
- Corvinus University of Budapest is launching an intensive one-year talent support training program called Illyés Gyula Program for young GCSE graduates whose parents and foster parents do not have a diploma and have not yet been admitted to any higher education institution.
- Students participating in the Illyés Gyula Program will receive intensive English language and mathematics classes, as well as a monthly financial allowance of HUF 130,000 net for 10 months, free dormitory accommodation, learning tools and travel support from the University.
- The training, worth almost EUR 5 000, provided free of charge to young people participating in the Programme, aims to provide enough support to those in disadvantaged situations for successful university admission.
“Corvinus University of Budapest is the number one university of economic and social sciences in Hungary, which has been training the opinion-forming social elite of the future for decades. However, this is not the same as training the children of the elite. There are many high-skilled young people who do not succeed at first because they did not receive adequate foreign language training in high school or because their parents could not afford to pay for advanced mathematics graduation courses. In our Illyés Gyula programme, the aim is to find these talented young people and give them a second chance to enter the university.” – explains Előd Takáts, Rector of Corvinus University, why he considered it important to establish a talent support program.
Young people participating in the programme worth almost EUR 5 000 can develop their English and mathematical skills free of charge through an international training programme. During the training period, the University will provide them with a monthly financial allowance (grant) of HUF 130,000, free dormitory accommodation, hot meals once a day, mentoring, monthly public transport pass in Budapest and reimbursement of the costs of travel home, plus a laptop, telephone and internet subscription for learning. The aim of the program, which prepares for the English language exam at intermediate level, is to allow talented young people participating in the training to cross the University gates in a year as Corvinus students or even other higher education institutions.
In order to apply for the Illyés Gyula Program, Hungarian citizenship, high school diploma and a minimum level of English language skills are required, an additional condition is that neither parent or foster parent of the young person applying for the program have a diploma, and the young person has a student status.
