István Kovács was born in 1949 in Békés. He conducted his secondary school studies in Budapest. Then he became admitted to the predecessor of Corvinus University, Karl Marx University of Economics in 1971. He graduated at the Faculty of Business Administration in 1974.
After receiving his diploma, he got an assistant professor position in the Department of Industrial Enterprise Organization. His teaching and research activity was connected to the foundation and management of small and medium sized enterprises. He was a member of László Rajk Collage of advanced studies, where he enhanced his knowledge and became involved in community activities. He has got his PhD degree in 1975.
From the beginning of the 1980s, in addition to teaching he conducted management consulting tasks for a number of Hungarian companies. Based on his experiences in consulting he founded the Economics university cooperative, which provided the opportunity for university teachers to participate in projects. The empirical experiences of these projects were integrated into the teaching activity of management related courses. He participated in the work of the National Association of Entrepreneurs and was a member of the management board.
In the 1990s, his activity became extended with real estate development: he participated in the implementation of real estate sales and development projects.
During this period, he also started working in film production. The landmark event of this activity was the set up and running of the Origo Film studio. This organization became a place for production of a number of films in international cooperation. The film studio is continuing its successful activity today as well.
