Professor David Vogel’s presentation on Monday, 4th October was the third session in the series of lectures initiated by the Research Management Office in December 2020 to support Corvinus faculty in their efforts to achieve research excellence and greater international visibility through publishing in high-ranking academic journals.
David J Vogel is not only one of the most highly qualified professors at the University of California and a prolific academic writer but has several years’ experience as a reviewer and editor of top academic journals. He has been editor-in-chief of California Management Review since 2015.
Professor Vogel’s presentation focused on topics closely related to successful publishing in high-ranking journals, from the relevance of the chosen topic, through the importance of the writing style to the length of the review process. He emphasised the importance of work that must precede the actual writing process, namely a thorough search for best fitting journal and a detailed analysis of the target journal and its guidelines. If this homework is done and the article meets the general criteria of the given publication, it stands a much better chance of getting published. His advice to all researchers but particularly to those first embarking on this career is to read articles by the best representatives of one’s research field in the top academic journals and to identify the qualities that ensured their publication success. Similarly important for young researchers is to achieve visibility and for this they must make every effort to build up their network by going to conferences and presenting their work to the academic community. A good network and visibility open up to collaboration and publication opportunities.
The lecture was attended by a record number of nearly fifty Corvinus researchers. Questions were posed both orally and in writing and the event turned into a lively discussion. When asked about his advice for Corvinus University to achieve better international ranking, he underlined the importance of becoming a truly international institution by short-term and long-term recruitment and visitors from abroad and by attending and organising international conferences to increase the institution’s visibility. By listing some recent examples, the Vice-Rector for Research, Professor Gyula Vastag confirmed that this was clearly the University’s intention, and conscious efforts have recently been taken by Research Management to support individual researchers and institutes to realise these goals.
The event concluded with a generous offer by Professor Vogel: Corvinus faculty members will be added to the mailing list of California Management Review, and those interested in becoming peer reviewers for the journal will be entered into the relevant data base. The list of researchers will be compiled and forwarded to the professor by Research Management. If interested, please fill in the following questionnaire using your Corvinus email address by 15 October 2021 (16:00).
Those who were unable to attend the event can watch Professor Vogel’s presentation and also access his slides on CMR.
