How to organise a successful and sustainable arts festival? A flea market in a bustling village, a concert in a barn courtyard, a new wave circus in a field: the atmosphere of the Valley of Arts is unique and unforgettable. In the Útravaló podcast, Natália Oszkó-Jakab, General Director of the Valley of Arts, told us about her career journey and sustainable, rural festival making.

“When the team at the Valley of Arts was very limited and the festival had to be rebuilt, I stood by the festival,” – Natália took over the organisation of the festival in 2010 with a young team. In addition to Kapolcs, Taliándörögd has also been actively developed for a few years, and more recently there have been more and more programmes in Vigántpetend. This year, between 23 July and 1 August, more than 1800 programmes await visitors.

The Valley of Arts started in 1989 in Kapolcs. “The founders didn’t think of it as a regime-changing festival, they just had a good idea,” says Natália in the podcast. By the turn of the millennium, six municipalities had taken part, but in 2008, state subsidies were so cut that the “Valley of Magic” was held: they tried to make magic with the available money. The following year, the festival was cancelled, but since Natália and her team took the lead, it has gone from strength to strength.
