Alexandra Köves is an Associate Professor at the Department of Decision Sciences at Corvinus University and the Head of the Ecological Economics Research Centre within the Corvinus Institute for Advanced Studies (CIAS). She previously served as one of the Vice Presidents of ESEE for three years. Her research focuses on possible degrowth scenarios, exploring alternatives to the current economic growth paradigm. She has contributed to the development and launch of several ecological economics courses and has published works on the power of transformative learning in this field. A committed advocate for ecological economics, Köves hosts two podcasts: the Hungarian-language “Zöld Egyenlőség” (“Green Equality”), which has been running for nearly five years with over 170 episodes, and “Economics for Rebels”, the English-language podcast of the European Society for Ecological Economics, which she co-founded and co-hosts.
As President, her primary goal is to broaden the reach of ecological economics as a mature scientific discipline, engaging with students, like-minded organizations, civil society, and policymakers.
“Such professional recognition is not just about one individual, but also about the scientific community that surrounds them and the colleagues actively working within it. I truly believe that Corvinus fosters such an inspiring academic environment, and this alternative research field offers many opportunities to create something novel on an international scale.” – said Alexandra Köves regarding her new role.
Ecological economics is a multidisciplinary research field that considers the economy as an embedded system within society and the ecological environment. It calls for a reformation of economic thinking to ensure environmental sustainability and social justice. The foundations of the field were laid in the 1970s, and it was institutionalized in 1989 with the establishment of the International Society for Ecological Economics (ISEE) and the launch of the academic journal Ecological Economics. The European Society for Ecological Economics (ESEE), which represents European researchers within the ISEE, was founded in 1996.
