The call of the MTA “Lendület” Programme is available!

The aim of the programme is to strengthen the Hungarian young researcher base by attracting and retaining internationally outstanding researchers and outstanding young talents from abroad, while supporting young researchers' efforts to become independent.

The following categories of researchers with a PhD/DLA degree are eligible to apply to lead a research group on the basis of their age and scientific merit: 

Lendület I “Induló” (Starting) category 

Lendig I. This is a form of support for the establishment of a new independent research group, aimed at attracting and retaining young researchers, for the implementation of promising new research projects. 

Conditions: 

  1. Under 40 years old (born after 1 January 1985).
  2. PhD degree obtained after 1 January 2015 and before 31 December 2021.
  3. has previously been awarded a prestigious national (OTKA/NERP, MTA Bolyai) OR comparable international postdoctoral or research grant with a research topic as an individual or as a research team leader OR has been selected after 1 January 2022 for a Starting, Consolidator, Advanced or Synergy grant in a European Research Council (ERC) second round evaluation
  4. Has not previously been awarded a Momentum grant as a research team leader.
  5. Undertake to apply for an ERC Call for Excellence during the period of the Suspension grant and present this application in your final report. 

Lendület H “Haladó” (Advanced) category 

For applicants aiming to develop a new topic with a promising breakthrough research potential or to continue well-established, excellent research projects. 

Internationally recognised senior researchers with a track record of sustained excellence and increasing performance who have experience as research team leaders are eligible to apply, subject to the following requirements: 

  1. have recently been awarded a grant for the development of their own research topic in a recent international grant competition comparable to the Lendület grant (e.g. basic research with a duration of at least 4-5 years and a priority funding amount): 
    • For ongoing Lendület grants, the three-year peer review evaluation must be rated as “excellent“,
    • for Lendület research completed in the last 5 years (after 31 December 2019), the final evaluation must be ‘excellent‘,
    • or reached the second round of evaluation with an ERC Starting, Consolidator, Advanced or Synergy proposal after 1 January 2022.
  1. undertake to apply for ERC Consolidator or Advanced before the end of the third year of the Suspension grant and to present this application in its three-yearly report. 

For the winners of both categories, the applicant team leader is expected to form a young researcher team, in line with the objective of the Lendület Programme. 

The amount of funding per grant application is as follows 

The amount of non-reimbursable grant per project: 

Minimum amount for each programme is HUF 25 million per year. 

Maximum amount for Category I: on average HUF 40 million per year. 

Maximum amount for Category H: on average HUF 50 million per year. 

For both categories of Momentum, the grant can only be awarded once! 

Researchers who have won a grant in the National Research Excellence Programme’s EXCELLENCE research call in 2024will not be eligible for a Lendület grant in 2025. 

Applications must be submitted in English!
